The Los Angeles Kings were founded in June 1967 as part of the 1967 NHL expansion. Los Angeles Kings Ticket Holders watched their team play home games at The Forum in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, for 32 years, until they moved to the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles at the start of the 1999–2000 season.

The 1970s and early 1980s, featured impressive regular-season play by the Los Angeles Kings, but they defeated early in the post-season. Their highlights in those years included the strong goaltending of Rogie Vachon, and the so-called “Triple Crown Line” of Charlie Simmer, Dave Taylor, and Hall of Fame player Marcel Dionne.

However, the 1988–89 season would be a big turning point for the franchise when the Kings acquired the league’s best payer Wayne Gretzky, in a blockbuster trade with the Edmonton Oilers. In Gretzky's first season with the Kings, he led the team in scoring with 168 points, and won his ninth Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Gretzky’s arrival not only thrilled Los Angeles Kings Ticket Holders, but generated excitement about hockey in Southern California in general. In fact, the popularity of the Los Angeles Kings paved the way for the arrival of two other California-based franchises—the Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks.

Gretzky, along with fellow Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille and defenseman Rob Blake led the Kings to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1993. However, Los Angeles Kings fans wouldn’t see their powerhouse team win a Stanley Cup until 2012 (defeating the Devils) and again in 2014 (defeating the Rangers).
